  T HE common structures of the AX compounds are shown in Figure 3. Of these, the NaCl structure ormrs most frequently, perhaps hecause it tolerates a wider variation in the nature of its building stones than do the other types. To establish the conditions which favor this structure, we shall study the transition from this type to other typical AX lattices.
